Bible (YouVersion)

App: Bible

Developer: YouVersion

Search for a Bible on the App Store and this will be the top result, admittedly, they got the best name for their app!

If you want a Bible App to be your daily go to Bible App, then in my opinion, this is it.

Open the App and you’ve got a daily guided verse of the day with a video of someone sharing a thought, a passage to read and a prayer.

There’s plenty of reading plans you can use and the app will give you a daily reminder for these as well.

There’s not just your usual Bible through a year reading plans available, you can have plans on a variety of subjects such as, anxiety, love, depression, hope, peace, and so much more!

As you use the app you can earn badges as rewards and you can also follow churches and see their upcoming events. You can also connect and follow friends who use the app as well.

Most importantly, of course, you can read the Bible! There are lots of translations available and you can download them for offline use. What’s also good is that some versions come with audible versions that you can have read out to you. The NIV for example has three different options available for the variants of its translation and it also has a dramatised version you can have read.

Using the app, you can see why this is often people’s first choice of Bible App to use as their daily option. It provides so many different options and the verse of the day features are a great tool to help you get into that daily discipline of being in the word.

Bible App Reviews

There are countless Bible and Bible Study apps available today. Below are reviews of three that I’ve personally used and found especially helpful in different contexts.

App: ESV Bible

Developer: Crossway

Since the ESV is my main translation of choice, the ESV Bible app has been my go-to for years—both in church and for personal reading. Crossway consistently produces high-quality resources, and this app is no exception.

The interface is clean and straightforward, making it easy to focus on Scripture without distractions. Signing in with an account allows notes and favorites to sync across devices, though I primarily use the app just for reading.

The standout feature for me is the integration with the ESV Study Bible. I can open study notes in a split window while reading, which adds depth to my study without leaving the app.

Crossway also offers a subscription for £3.99/month, giving access to their full digital library of Study Bibles, Expository Commentaries, and other study tools. Considering the price of these resources in print, this is an excellent value.

Overall: A simple, easy-to-use app with powerful tools for going deeper in Bible study. Highly recommended if you primarily use the ESV.

App: Bible Study

Developer: Olive Tree

Olive Tree has been a pioneer in digital Bible tools since the early days of mobile phones. I remember first using their app when Bible software on phones was still rare—and they’ve continued to be a strong option ever since.

The Bible Study app offers an extensive library of translations, commentaries, and study resources. Many are free, while others can be purchased through their online store. A standout option is their subscription model, where—for example—I paid £5.99/month for the ESV pack, which included study Bibles, commentaries, and additional study aids.

The app’s features are robust: split-screen for viewing the Bible alongside notes or a commentary, the ability to make highlights and annotations, and syncing across devices. For iPhone/iPad users, the “verse of the day” widget is a nice touch.

My only criticism is that the interface can feel overly complex. There are a lot of menus, buttons, and features, which can be overwhelming at first. Even after long-term use, I still feel like there are tools hidden in the app I haven’t fully explored.

Overall: A powerhouse app for serious Bible study, especially on iPad or desktop. If you’re willing to invest time learning its features, it can be an excellent all-in-one study tool.

App: Bible

Developer: YouVersion

Search for “Bible” in any app store, and YouVersion’s Bible app will be the top result. With its simple name and massive user base, it’s easily the most popular Bible app in the world—and for good reason.

This app shines as a daily devotional tool. It greets you with a verse of the day, often accompanied by a short video reflection, passage reading, and prayer. There are thousands of reading plans available, not just for reading through the Bible in a year but also topical plans on subjects like anxiety, hope, love, and peace. The app even sends reminders to help you stay consistent.

Community features are another highlight: you can connect with friends, follow churches, and track progress through badges and streaks. Of course, it also provides a wide selection of Bible translations, most of which are available offline. Many versions include audio, with some (like the NIV) offering multiple voices, including dramatized readings.

Overall: If you’re looking for a daily-use Bible app, YouVersion is hard to beat. Its combination of reading plans, community features, and accessibility make it an excellent tool for building a consistent Bible reading habit.
